Building close connections in insular cities can frequently feel intimidating and impersonal.
Designed from an introvert’s perspective, Unlikelihood turns tabletop games into intimate and cinematic experiences.
We write stories that match you with people we think you should meet.
You branch out through immersive play.
WELCOME TO UNLIKELIHOOD, 憬言.
HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT.
Decipher brain twisters with strangers.
Triumph with the skills you never thought come in handy.
Shuffle the smalltalk by diving into questions you’ve rarely been asked before.
See how far your ideas take when you give them space to soar.
What do Stranger Things, Rogue One and Spirited Away have in common?
All of them illustrate the possibilities when people from seemingly disparate 'universes' work to understand each other's languages and solve problems through the exchange of contrasting perspectives.
It took an inter-dimensional gate breach to connect Mike and Eleven.
It took a cyber attack to form the partnership between Wreck It Ralph and Fix It Felix.
An out-of-the-norm scenario brings people closer in the craziest way.
That's where Unlikelihood comes in.
Whether you're alone or with friends, take a chance, step into our stories and see who you'll find.
"Games were super fun as it covered a wide range of team-building skills!"
- Xixi C.
"I haven't been to an event like this. It is so refreshing and different!"
- Priya K.
"Games were super creative and thoughtful."
- Stephen W.
"The different themes of each room is inspired by how Clarence really perceives the movies. He picks out the highlights of the movies and turn them into creative games that do not just provide fun but also stimulate the participants' minds.
I am still in awe how Clarence has managed to conjure such crazy ideas!"
- Jess S.
"Fast-paced and incredibly imaginative, the games are really engaging and everyone ended up cheering and laughing!
I had so much fun even when I didn’t know anyone there!
I really appreciated the amount of thought that went into choosing the venues which was key to bringing the magic and ambience of the movies to real life! "
- Sharon L.
Designed through the eyes of an introvert
As someone who travels alone often and doesn't feel they have a strong group to belong in, Unlikelihood is all about diverting cliques and breaking down stigmas at social settings.
Whether you're introverted, extroverted or somewhere in between, we welcome to join us.
1. We fully facilitate the experience.
It’s always awkward to initiate the first conversations in a room full of strangers.
We’re here to connect you to one another and we’ve crafted narratives that will prompt you to bond over a common mission.
2. We are inspired by film's power to spur dialogue.
Film is a great vehicle to speak about uncommon topics with a comfortable distance.
Don’t worry about what to ask people because we’ve got questions ready for each theme…ones you’ve probably never been asked before!
3. We introduce you to people we think you should meet.
We get it. In a foreign setting, it feels best to seek the people in a that look or behave like us. However, this writes off the chance of discovering surprising connections.
For each event, teams are carefully formed so that every participant should know someone and also has the opportunity to work with someone new.
Coming alone or new in town?
We’ve got you covered as we work to get you paired with someone with parallel experiences.
4. We design a series of games that champion everyone's inner underdog.
The world to us is far too often unjustly split between brawn and brains. What if you never felt like you ever fit in either factions?
Each story tests a set of niche and different skills so you may just find that ability to write things backwards or your secret talent of balancing things are going to come in very handy.
5. We love to role-play and improv
A movie scene is nothing without its committed actors. Each experience has a dress code and we want you to come in costume so that the scene can truly come to life.
Having said that, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, (as you’ll see through our skits) and you shouldn’t either! Everything is all in the name of good fun.
6. We cap the numbers
Our events are capped at 30 participants. This means you’re more likely to remembering each other’s faces and perhaps even names.
But it also means there’s less ambient noise so that you can feel better communicating without straining your throat too much.
SEASON 2 (2018)
A NEW EXPERIENCE IN TORONTO IS IN THE WORKS.
SEASON 1 (2017)
Our first stories were each based on one film and often explored what happened on screen.
"DETECTION" INSPIRED BY EX MACHINA
HOSTED AT DEHUB, SAN PO KONG
Our first social invited players into the moody, unsettling environment of Alex Garland's breakout movie and imagined what may have happened after the end of the movie. Players discover that Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno's character) is still alive after Nathan’s (Oscar Isaac) attack, however she’s now been recruited as part of a bigger underground plan.
However an intruder is disguised in the mix and looking to hack the system. It was down to the players to figure who that person was.
In line with the theme 'Detection', this experience tested players' abilities to separate truths and lies, absorb instructions quickly and tap into someone else’s headspace.
"DISTANCE" INSPIRED BY YOUR NAME
HOSTED AT CHILLAZY, KWUN TONG
As a distinct turn from NO.1, NO.2 was inspired by the whimsical romantic-comedy Your Name. Players got placed into the middle of the storyline as they stepped into the shoes of Taki's schoolmates.
The story flashes back to the moment Taki realises that his crush, Mitsuha, is reaching out to him to help from an alternate dimension and warning him that they have to escape to avoid a future meteor strike. As his friends, players help Taki make sense of the circumstance.
In this experience, players tested their abilities to make sense out of disparate elements, their abstract communication skills, and their perception of time.
"DISCRETION" INSPIRED BY HARRY POTTER #5
HOSTED AT HIBISCUS CLUB, WHAMPOA
In this special edition, we collaborated with floral boutique company Scissors and Twine to present an experiential floral workshop called "The Room of Requirement".
The story began as players acted as students from Hogwarts who are forced to find refuge in muggle territory after word got out that the Ministry has fallen. Death-eaters are right behind their tails and players work together to find a spell to protect themselves.
Following the theme 'Discretion', players tested their knowledge in unusual sciences, their dexterity and memory under pressure.
"DEVIANCE" INSPIRED BY BABY DRIVER
HOSTED AT HQ CONCEPTS, CENTRAL
NO.4 may have been our most challenging experience.
Players all assembled at a colourful warehouse and are informed that they are the new recruits for an upcoming heist. However, the terms of their engagement turn out to be far from what they hoped for. Players are told that their their failure to live up to their job demands may result in the death of a loved one.
Inspired by the precision of editing and the fast paced energy of Baby Driver, the social consisted of games that all revolve around quick thinking and reactions.
"COMPLICITY" INSPIRED BY ALIAS GRACE
ANDKILLING OF A SACRED DEER
HOSTED AT FILL HK, FOTAN
A malpractice scandal has just rocked a regressive, elitist community. In this area, justice serves the wealthy and many are quick to deny the truth in favour of saving face.
Set in a hospice care facility, players took on the roles of medical experts as they were brought in for advice, but they soon realised not everyone present had the same intentions.
An encounter with one of the inpatients eventually leads them to discover a series of puzzles woven through the local hospital's records. To solve them, players had to read between the lines and embrace the abstract.
INSPIRED BY CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
HOSTED AT BEI BEI BOOKHOUSE, KAM TIN
